PATRICK

Patrick Robinson is a #1 New York Times bestselling techno-thriller novelist, who rivals the best of Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler and Frederick Forsyth. His books are geo-political tales of anti-terrorism and the balance of world power, usually conducted on the high seas, always packed with US Navy SEAL black-operations in the most sinister environments on earth. A hard line of chilling reality runs through the spine of each book.

The first techno-thriller, Nimitz Class, was a big action story, about a rogue Islamic terrorist in a stolen submarine, armed with a nuclear-tipped torpedo capable of obliterating a Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier. It was published in 1997, and hit the New York Times bestseller list in its first week. Critics called it, “The best military thriller since The Hunt For Red October.” One month later, John McTiernan optioned the rights for Universal Studios.

But Nimitz Class was never made. McTiernan, who had given the rights to his wife, ended his marriage and, subsequently, the project died in the hands of an ex-wife who would not allow the film to move forward.

Despite selling millions of books around the world, in twenty different languages, a film has never been made from a Patrick Robinson novel.

And after his fifth hugely popular Barracuda 945, about the Hamas General Ravi Rashood – a turn-coat from the British Special Forces – the world changed. The Twin Towers In New York City were attacked by al-Qaeda on September 11th, 2001.

Soon afterwards, the terrorist genre fell from grace. Robinson continued writing a new novel every year, but sales were hampered by current events and the lack of exposure a movie provides to authors.

In 2006, Robinson received a phone call. A Navy SEAL had fought his way out of Afghanistan in the summer of 2005, after his team were ambushed by the Taliban high in the Hindu Kush. He wanted to write a book to honor his lost comrades. Patrick was approved by the US Navy to write Marcus Luttrell’s story, as the pre-eminent writer of Navy SEAL fiction. The book was published one year later. Lone Survivor was #1 on the New York Times bestseller list for the entire summer of 2007. In fact, it was on the bestseller list for eight months. In August, 2007, Universal Studios bought the rights for $3 million.

Patrick Robinson writes novels that read like blockbuster movies. They are fast-paced thrillers and meticulously researched, and filled with some of the most sinister villains and hickory-tough heroes in American bookstores.

The protagonist, who features in every book, is the brilliant, irascible Texas admiral Arnold Morgan, who works in the White House as the President’s National Security Adviser. He is rude, tough, cynical and ‘no bullshit.’ One of the leading literary agents in London, the very experienced Ed Victor, who also represents Frederick Forsyth, described Admiral Morgan as the most interesting character in contemporary fiction.

This summer, his brand new series is launched, with a new, iron-man hero, the ex-Navy SEAL Mack Bedford. The book is called “Diamondhead.”

Patrick, I have all your books and while I was sad to see the Admiral Morgan series come to and end, I just finished reading Diamonhead and absolutely loved it! I hope your planning on writing a series involing Mack Bedford! Can’t wait for your next novel!

“Diamondhead” was a great read! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just wish that the F-18s hadn’t destroyed the stone Diamondhead storage bunker with a Sidewinder air-to-air missile. I don’t think so! Maybe Mr. Robinson was just glad that the book was almost finished at that point.

Just read Seawolf, a brilliant read – picked up an old second/third hand and dog-eared copy at a charity sale for 49p. One of the best books I have ever read (on train, causing me to miss my stop several times) and on my lunch break (late lunch). I am now hooked and will be purchasing ‘Nimitz Class’ next along with the rest of the series. I love the character of Arnold Morgan, sadly the kind of man that is dying out these days in our ever politically correct society!

Here’s hoping for many more books from Patrick.

    Best Regards,

    Christian

  5. Patrick Robinson…Your Just the Best!

I have read most of your books, and I am half way through Scimitar SL2 at the moment.
I often read on the train, and never have I read a book that’s caused me to burst out laughing or cry in public. You have achieved this on many occasions!
I have often thought your books would make the best movies and look forward to this becoming a reality.
My favorite author….keep writing the good stuff ; )

    Much respect.

I have read all of Mr. Robinson’s fiction titles and enjoyed them very much, however I am having some difficulty with the current novel Diamondhead. I spent 17 years in the Armoured Corps and I am having difficulty with his reference to the hull of a tank as the “fuselage” and the turret as the “cockpit” He also refers to the main guns as the “main artillery” and has 2 Navy SEALs traveling as passengers in Army tanks which are extremely cramped in the best of circumstances and I can’t imagine any tank being combat effective with 5 men plus equipment in the turret. The whole opening scenario of sending SEALs in tanks, in daylight, into a suspected enemy strong hold just doesn’t ring true to me. Can anyone provide a real world example to support this scenario and terminology?
    Thanks
    Steve

    To Mr Patrick Robinson,
Just to confirm a detail in your book To the Death. I thought, correct me if im wrong that young Cmdr Rick Hunter was married to Sir Lain Mclean daughter. Should you not have mentioned that in your book, especially since Rick had met his in laws before. This agiateted me to no end, i have followed your books for years and you end like this, shame.

    Mr. Robinson,

To say I am a fan of your writing would be an understatement of gargantuan proportions. I have read almost all of your books, and just finished Marcus Luttrells “Lone Survivor”, which literally shook me to my core. Never in my life has something effected me the way “Lone Survivor” did. As a student of Communication, and studying the media throughout my education at La Salle University (double track in Mass Communication and Media Writing), I have decided to become a part of the solution to the liberal left-wing media, and not part of the problem. To have men who sit in cushy chairs behind desks, those who have never stepped foot in battle be the ones in charge of creating the rules of engagement is beyond unfair; it borders on criminal. Not only do our enemies recognize and commonly use our own media against us, the enforcement of rules of engagement and the Geneva Convention, in a part of the world where rules cease to apply, is nonsensical to say the least. The purpose of this letter is to ask for your help, in exactly how I should go about attempting to inflict change on something few people have had success in doing. I have no military experience, aside from my two Grandfathers both serving in WWII, but I am daily increasing my knowledge of the subject. Whatever words of advice you could supply I would be extremely greatful for, and I thank you for opening this individuals eyes.

    Sincerely,

    Matt Neder

Hi, Patrick – I am a Registered Nurse, living on Cape Cod (Sandwich, MA). Read Lone Survivor & have some information for Marcus Luttrell that may be of great benefit to him. I tried every Google result possible & can’t find an email or address for him. I am sending this information to you, in the hope that you can pass it along to him.

    Re: PTSD

Dr. Allan Botkin is a therapist with a new therapy specific to PTSD. In 1-3 sessions, he has been able to totally eliminate nightmares & the resulting stress & insomnia. (Your book detailed Marcus continuing to have nightmares, hearing the screams of his fellow Seal Team members calling for his help.) After the therapy, patients have reported an experience close to the Near Death Experiences commonly reported by surgical & critically ill patients. It provides relief similar to those who have successful sessions with valid psychics & mediums: seeing the dead relative or friend as whole, well and happy in a different spiritual plane, even “sensing” their thoughts of well-being & messages of comfort to the living.

Dr. Botkin has trained many in his therapy. One therapist, Beth Wechsler, is a social worker living in Mashpee. I met with her to try to gain further information about the way the therapy works. She has seen improvement in her patients & is enthusiastic about the method. (She has a slightly different spin on it, using an exercise ball in each of the patient’s hands to simulate the “back & forth reprogramming” of the thought processes.)

Dr. Botkin has a spot on his website with a picture of a soldier in uniform and a telephone number. He is requesting to hear from any military with PTSD who have served in Afghanistan or Iraq. He is reaching out to help them. If it is possible to email this information to Marcus, please respond with the email address. I’ll send Dr. Botkin’s web site address. Marcus Luttrell seems pretty well insulated & contacting him may not be possible for me. In that case, please just reply to this email, letting me know if this is information he wants & prefers to have me send it to you for forwarding to him.

By the way, you are one fantastic author!!! My husband has read Diamondhead – which I am about read – and he shares my enthusiasm for your ability. You have the gifts of sensitivity & insight that very nearly put the reader inside the head of the character. Such a treat for readers – far above the “formula” writers who have been so successful, but who leave the reader with little except a well-worn bookmark. (“Well-worn” because the reader keeps putting the book down, I call these war & spy novels “bathroom books”.)

Thank you for enriching our reading life – we read about 1-3 books a week – and congratulations on the upcoming film of Lone Survivor. Good luck with keeping the film industry at bay & retaining the integrity of your product!

I just finished your book, SLIDER. While I found it fun to read, I thought your research on the part of Natalie, the musician, severely lacking. The Chicago Symphony is one of the top 5 orchestras in the US, with members ( and extras) making over $ 2500/ week. There would never be a combination harp/violin/piano player with the orchestra, because they already have full-time players, at least in harp and Piano, earning well over $100,000 a year ( they do have extra violinists, but only to augment the section). To state that they don’t have bassoons ( page 276 )in the CSO is one of the most ridiculous things in your book. The portrayal you give would be similar to one in which Natalie goes to see Tony play for a Major league team, and he catches the first three innings, then pitches middle relief, and moves to centerfield to finish the game. Also, The CSO does not tour during the summer for a few days. They have a residency at Ravinia, and their tours are usually 3 weeks long, and include staying at hotels rated no lower than 4 stars, while receiving almost $200/day for meals on top of the $2500 in salary.

    Thank you,
    Ray Riccomini

    Will admiral Morgan return?

I’m hoping to get in touch with Mr. Patterson in order to ask a few questions about his work, especially “Kilo Class.” (This would be for an academic monograph on Taiwan-related fiction.)

    Thank you very much,
    Bei Dawei
